Walking Routes

Walk from Las Alquerias

The walk starts from the restaurant Los Donceles and the Casa Forestal Las Alquerias.  It is marked by yellow and white slashes and there is a board showing the route at the start.

Heading towards the old mine ruins from Collado Pilon

Valley below the Black Cliffs (2 hours approx.) From the Camperstop near Totana.

Leave the camperstop and turn right to the bridge.  At the bridge turn left, over the bridge and then turn right along the gravel track alongside the canal.  Walk along here until the next bridge.  Here turn left up a track, passing a couple of small buildings on your left.  Continue along the main track, ignoring any tracks to the left or right.  Continue uphill until you arrive at a T-junction with a major track.  Turn left and then immediately right on another major track.  At the next junction fork right, cross a dry river bed and climb uphill.  Immediately after passing a house on your right take a left fork.  (Leaving the more major track).  Pass by some ruined pillars on the right and then go through a wire gate.

Continue along this track until you cross the dry river bed again.  Go uphill and follow a small path uphill to the left.  At the top turn left down the major track.  Keep on this track, passing a reservoir on your left.  Follow the track round the reservoir and go straight on through a fence.  (If wet walk around the other side of the reservoir).

Approaching the reservoir

Follow this track downhill and through a forest gate.  At the T-junction turn left and go around a valley.  Pass a ruined forest house on your right and keep straight ahead, passing your outward route.  You arrive at a tarmac road.  Go down the road back to the canal.  Cross the bridge, turn right and then left back down to the Polideportivo.

The Black Cliffs walk  (3-4 hours)

Leave the Camperstop and turn right to the bridge.  Cross the bridge and walk up the tarmac road and continue straight ahead on the gravel track.  At the Y junction take the right fork and continue along this track, crossing a dry river bed and climbing up to pass a house.  Immediately after passing the house take a fork to the left (this is the less defined track at the junction).  Continue along this track, passing through a wire gate-way until the track crosses the dry river bed again.  The track then climbs uphill, now more of a path, until it joins a major track.

Turn right on this track, now walking through a narrower valley with the black cliffs on either side.  Cross the dry river bed again (water pipe on the left) and climb uphill for a short distance.

View of Morron Redondo from the track on the outward route

A path crosses the track.  Take the path to the right.  Walk  this path for approximately 3 km, at first contouring along the hillside and then zig-zagging uphill, until the path reaches a high point at a feeding area for the arrui (wild sheep).  The on-going path becomes a track.  Follow this track until a junction is reached.  Turn left on this track and start the return route downhill.  The track is water-washed in places and a little rocky, so take care.  The track continues downhill through a narrow cliff-lined valley until the outward path is crossed.  Continue on the main track until you pass a reservoir.  Follow the track around the reservoir and continue straight ahead.

View across reservoir

Pass through a park gate and at a T-junction turn left.  Continue on this track passing an old ermita until the tarmac road is reached once again.  Take the road downhill back to the canal, cross the bridge turn right back to the Camperstop.
